Understanding the ways of using hydro power… grid tied, net metering, feed-in-tariff, and off-grid.
Net Metering Grid Tied Net Metered systems involve connecting your system to the power grid but you use the power, and it offsets your electric bill. If you don’t produce as much electricity as you use then the grid just supplies the difference and you get billed for that difference, if you produce more than … Read more
Be a walking talking billboard for change, add a save the environment or Greenbug Energy T-shirt or hat to your collection. Apparel can help get the message out to dozens of people every day. You’ll be amazed at the conversations that a hat or T-shirt can start, and are great ways to meet like minded people.
Call your local elected municipal government representative and talk to them about what the local municipal government is doing to protect the environment and what further they could be doing. Talk to them about how they could be using their municipally owned dams to earn revenue to lower local taxes and also save the environment by generating clean electricity. Tell them Greenbug can help.
Reduce your own energy consumption. You can reduce your own energy consumption without living like a caveman and changing your quality of life. Reducing energy consumption is key. Why not reduce energy consumption of any kind, renewable or otherwise, if it doesn’t affect your quality of life and if it pays? There are a number of things you can do.
Call or write to your elected officials telling them you support “net metering” and “Feed in Tariff” rules that pay a fair price per kilowatt hour and allow individuals to connect their renewable electricity generation systems such as solar, wind and hydro projects, to the local electric distribution grid. Distributed renewable generation of this type is efficient because energy is produced where it is used, it reduces the need for large ugly distribution lines, it keeps jobs and skills local, and increases energy security. Your elected officials at all levels need to hear this message.
If you’re a skilled tradesperson capable of doing a renewable energy project and have the opportunity to do one yourself, you can show others the way, by installing a system yourself and showcasing it to your neighbours. Not everyone has the skills to do it themselves, if you do, you can lead the way for others.
Start a renewable energy club online or in your local community and get together with other like minded people to share information and help each other implement projects.
If you have a renewable energy installation offer to show it to others who are interested or teach a local college or community education course on the subject and how you did yours and how to plan and execute a project. You would be surprised what you know!
