Local Business Receives $50,000 to Develop Waterpower Technology
June22, 2011 (Delhi, Ontario) — GreenBug Energy Inc. announced today that its affiliated business has received a financial contribution of up to $50,000 from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) to further develop its micro hydro-electric technology. The waterpower technology is well suited to small dams with heads as low as one to five meters.
“The contribution allows us to further perfect the design and engineering aspects of our system and makes it possible for us to design, engineer and manufacture small custom-made systems in less than one week” stated Brian Weber, Vice President of Production. “The speed in completing this complex process is important to both us and our customers in improving turnaround time and keeping costs down.”
There are thousands of small dams in Ontario and the rest of Canada owned by farmers, municipalities and conservation authorities. While most waterpower projects are measured in terms of megawatts which is 1,000 times greater than a kilowatt, a 1 kilowatt system, working all 8,760 hours in a year, is capable of generating enough electricity to power an average small home. GreenBug Energy focuses on systems between 1 kW and 100 kW in size. The company’s technology is considered an important emergent low-head waterpower technology by the Ontario Waterpower Association.
“With growing concerns over rising electricity prices and global warming there has been increased interest in going off-grid or net metering with smaller systems to reduce electricity bills in addition to the larger grid connected systems. Everyone knows water power is affordable and reliable but they tend to think of waterpower as being big projects like at Niagara Falls, but small micro and pico size systems are now financially feasible” said Tony Bouk, Vice President of Business Development.
GreenBug Energy Inc. develops micro hydro-electric projects at small dams as low as one metre in head and sells and distributes custom designed systems domestically and internationally.
