{"id":6448,"date":"2013-11-17T02:13:05","date_gmt":"2013-11-17T02:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greenbugenergy.com\/?p=6448"},"modified":"2022-05-30T11:33:05","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T16:33:05","slug":"looking-to-europe-to-see-the-future-of-electricity-rates-in-ontario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greenbugenergy.com\/tonys-blog\/looking-to-europe-to-see-the-future-of-electricity-rates-in-ontario","title":{"rendered":"Looking to Europe to see the future of electricity rates in Ontario"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"6448\" class=\"elementor elementor-6448\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-242821f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"242821f\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5d1daaeb\" data-id=\"5d1daaeb\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5c8f5c02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5c8f5c02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>I was reading a newspaper article yesterday evening about a municipal councillor who was opposed to a solar installation by a private party on the basis that he didn&#8217;t think the public could afford to pay the 30-39 cents per kilowatt hour that the provincial government was offering.\u00a0 It struck me as a strange dynamic; provincial government incenting investment, and municipal against it.\u00a0 But, hey it&#8217;s politics, I usually don&#8217;t try and figure it out too much.\u00a0 But the councillor&#8217;s comment about the public not being able to afford these &#8220;high electricity rates&#8221; being paid somehow reminded me of a time of my youth when I was about\u00a019 and was travelling around the world after high school in the mid 80&#8217;s.\u00a0 I spent considerable time in Europe, particularly Germany, and I remember when I was there I was shocked by the high price of gas and that it was all non-leaded as they had banned the leaded gas before North America. Our gasoline prices at home were still about a 1.20 a gallon, and in Germany it was selling for in the 70 cent range per litre if I remember correctly.\u00a0 Now here we are paying 1.20 and more a litre.\u00a0 Who would have thought.\u00a0 And who would have thought we could be paying for it.\u00a0 Yet, I still see no one really switching to small cars, everyone is still driving the big SUV&#8217;s and pickups even if they don&#8217;t need them.\u00a0 For some reason this little tid bit from Europe has always stuck with me.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like Europe is our big brother or sister, a little older than we are, a little more crowded, and they just seem to experience things a little ahead of us.\u00a0 My point is, if you want to know what&#8217;s coming, Europe isn&#8217;t a bad place to get a feel for the future.\u00a0 And I expect that just like we got used to the high gas prices, I expect we&#8217;ll\u00a0 get used to higher electricity prices.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s not going to be just renewables driving these price increases of electricity either, I read in the news that OPG was asking for a 30% increase on the price of nuclear power, and we all know that the non renewable sources well&#8230;&#8230; they just aren&#8217;t renewing themselves and scarcity will drive prices.<\/p><p>I wish I was back in Europe now, the rate they are paying for small hydropower is 37-39 cents per kWh, versus our 14.8 cents here.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading a newspaper article yesterday evening about a municipal councillor who was opposed to a solar installation by a private party on the basis that he didn&#8217;t think the public could afford to pay the 30-39 cents per kilowatt hour that the provincial government was offering.\u00a0 It struck me as a strange dynamic; &#8230; <a title=\"Looking to Europe to see the future of electricity rates in Ontario\" class=\"read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/greenbugenergy.com\/tonys-blog\/looking-to-europe-to-see-the-future-of-electricity-rates-in-ontario\" aria-label=\"Read more about Looking to Europe to see the future of electricity rates in Ontario\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[50],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.5 -
